The heatwave is taking a break over the next few days but it will be back with a vengeance next week.

The reprieve will come in the form of thunderstorms, torrential rain and blustery winds so it’s not ideal. But at least we’ll have a chance to cool down with temperatures set to drop to around 20C.

Yellow warnings are in place for most of England into the early hours of today and in north-east Scotland until 2 pm. Heavy rain was forecast, with as much as 30mm of rainfall in one hour and 60mm in three hours, while large hail, frequent lightning and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards.

Will Lang, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, confirmed the weather would change over the weekend.
