Manchester City defender John Stones says that his side's slow start gave them too much to do against Lyon. City trailed 2-1 at half-time against the French visitors and ended up losing 2-1 after Bernardo Silva.
"Conceding two sloppy goals set the game off really," said Stones. "We weren't at our best and did not play the football that everyone knows that we can play. We created chances in the second half in particular, but those two sloppy goals cost us the game and that is the harsh reality of the Champions League."
Stones also denied that Pep Guardiola's absence from the sideline as he served a suspension for a sending off against Liverpool in the competition last season. "Definitely not," he said.
"We are all so comfortable with how everything works. It would have been good if Pep had been there, but Mikel stepped in and did a great job. It is down to us and how we reacted to the goals. it is frustrating to come away with a defeat especially at home in a competition where we wanted to start off on a good foot."
