Lift Off! £600,000-A-Night Space Hotel To Launch In 2021 – 'it Will Change Your Life' express.co.uk
INTREPID interstellar enthusiasts will soon be given the opportunity to spend time above the stratosphere, as the world’s first luxury space hotel opens its doors 200 miles above Earth in 2021.
The hotel, Orion Span, is a single-module commercial space station. It plans to have its first guests in 2022. Orion Span will include “private suites for two, the most number of windows ever created for spaceflight, weightlessness, and the world's only authentic astronaut experience”.
A 12-day stay on board the vast spacecraft will set punters back an eye-watering $9.5million (£7.4million).
The company’s website is already accepting refundable deposits of $80,000 (£62,000).
All guests will undergo extensive pre-flight training, including an online certification programme and face-to-face training at a facility in Houston.
The Orion Span website says: “Believe you were meant for a less than ordinary life?
“Join us aboard Aurora Station for a 12-day adventure that will change your life.
“Experience the thrill of zero gravity, watch the aurora borealis, grow food in space, or dive into our holodeck, for the world's only authentic astronaut experience.”
The company’s CEO, Frank Bunger, told Space.com: “There's been innovation around the architecture to make it more modular and simpler to use and have more automation, so we don't have to have extravehicular activities or spacewalks.
“The goal when we started the company was to create that innovation to make simplicity possible, and by making simplicity possible, we drive a tremendous amount of cost out of it.”
Mr Bunger explained his company would be constructing Orion Span itself.
The company – some of whose key engineering players have helped design and operate the ISS (International Space Station) – is manufacturing the hotel in Houston and developing the software required to run it in the Bay Area.
The hotel can be expanded over time, in line with demand.
Mr Bunger said: “Our long-term vision is to sell actual space in those new modules.
“We're calling that a 'space condo'. So, either for living or subleasing, that's the future vision here – to create a long-term, sustainable human habitation in low Earth orbit.”
