Mark Carney Will See Through Brexit: Bank Of England Governor To Stay In Post Until 2020 express.co.uk
MARK Carney will continue as the Governor of the Bank of England until January 2020 and see through Britain's exit from the EU, Philip Hammond has confirmed as Mr Carney revealed he is "willing to do whatever he can in order to promote both a successful Brexit".
The Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed Mr Carney will stay on until January 2020, during Treasury Questions at the House of Commons this morning.
The Canadian will remain in his role until 31 January, 2020 after Mr Hammond and the Prime Minister asked him to extend his term “to support a smooth exit of the UK from the EU and an effective transition to the next Governor.”
A spokesman for Theresa May said the Prime Minister believes Mr Carney has been doing a good job.
Mr Hammond wrote to Mr Carney: “An extension of your term would ensure there is continuity at the Bank during this exceptional period and would also allow for a new Governor to be appointed during the Autumn next year after the terms of the UK’s withdrawal and the framework for the future partnership have been finalised.
