Mexico Earthquake: 5.4 Magnitude Tremor Rocks Near Guatemala express.co.uk
Mexico was struck by the 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, close to the cities of Pijijiapan and Tapachula. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not yet issued any advice. The US Geological Society said the earthquake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles at 10.20am BST.
It comes nearly a year to the day after Mexico City was rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, that ripped through the country’s capital. The earthquake, which struck on September 19, 2017, killed 370 people and injured more than 6,000 others. Mexico is one of the world’s most seismically active regions, sitting on several intersecting tectonic plates.
In total, seismic forces cause an average of 40 earthquakes a day in Mexico.
