Victories in key congressional elections in Georgia and South Carolina are a blow to the Democrats.Republicans have won congressional elections in Georgia and South Carolina seen by many as a referendum on Donald Trump's presidency.
In a close race in Georgia, Republican Karen Handel took 53% of the vote with Democrat Jon Ossoff on 47%.
In South Carolina, Republican Ralph Norman beat Democrat Archie Parnell in the solidly conservative fifth district.
House Speaker Paul Ryan congratulated Ms Handel on a "hard-earned" victory.
President Trump tweeted: "Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!"
