Care homes will be stopped from charging non-refundable upfront fees and forced to be more transparent over price increases following the introduction of new rules by the competition watchdog.
This is the culmination of months of work by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into unfair and unclear clauses in the contracts imposed on residents by care homes, as well as controversial practices such as continuing to charge for weeks after death.
The rules have been released as “advice” for care providers, who, if found to have breached consumer law, can face fines or be forced to issue refunds.
